At Contra Costa Humane Society, we want to be sure every animal has the most compatible human companion. Some of the animals that we help have special needs or particular temperaments, so we work hard to ensure that we assess your needs also.
CCHS lists adoptable animals through three different programs:
Foster Program: Available animals have been pulled from local animal shelters and placed in CCHS-approved foster homes until such time that they can be adopted. These animals are spayed/neutered before adoption, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. Find out more about the adoption program for cats/kittens or about the adoption program for dogs/puppies.
Re-Homing Assistance Program: CCHS acts as an advertising resource for members of the public who have to re-home their companion dog or cat. We provide all initial pre-screening of homes and pass along qualified candidates to the guardian, who arranges a meeting and determines an adoptive family.
Kitty Corner: A private, on-site shelter, Kitty Corner houses adult, senior and special-needs cats owned by Contra Costa County Animal Services and/or CCHS and adopts them to members of the public. All cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, FeLV/FIV tested and vaccinated.
How does the adoption process work?
Because of the different programs, our animals reside in different locations:
- Dogs and puppies reside in foster homes and can be met by appointment.
- Cats and kittens reside either at Kitty Corner or in foster homes.
- Kitty Corner cats can be met during the week by appointment (to ensure someone's here to let you in); by drop-in at weekend adoption events; or by appointment on weekends.
- Cats and kittens in foster homes can be met by appointment.
We recommend browsing the dogs and cats we have available for adoption and ask that all adopters complete an adoption application before meeting the animal of interest to help us get the best of idea of the type of animal for which you're looking. Once we've received the application, we'll review it for compatibility and be glad to set up a meeting!
