Coming Attractions!

Please meet our littlest and most recent additions to the Adopt-A-Friend Program!  These five little kittens were brought to a shelter without mama cat, and thanks to caring shelter hands, they made their way to our organization and into a loving foster home.  We'll be posting pictures weekly of their progress and while we'll be starting to accept adoption applications after August 8th, the kittens won't be able to officially go home with their new families until they reach 8 weeks of age, around September 5th, 2008.  Be sure to stay tuned to these sweethearts!

Well, yesterday was quite a sad evening as little Otter unfortunately passed away very unexpectedly.  Otter was the runt of the litter and always a bit developmentally behind in comparison to his siblings, who continue to thrive and grow, but we were hopeful that with extra TLC he would start to catch up soon enough.  Sadly though, that wasn't the case and not the way his little life was supposed to be.  Sometimes young kittens simply can't thrive when taken from mom so early.  We're thankful that he was able to receive all the love he did in his six short weeks and that he was able to know what it felt like to have a real home.  He was in the arms of his wonderful foster family when he passed and we wish him many happy times on the other side of Rainbow Bridge.  He was a very loved little kitten and will be sincerely missed.

Our apologies for the missing week in these kittens' lives - it's been a busy time of year!   Nevertheless, the little kittens were anxious for their photo shoot and some were more eager than others to have their faces plastered across the screen (ahem... Garfield).   Included below are more pictures of each and a bit more about each of their personalities, as they're really starting to show more each day!  Now that they're 6 weeks of age, the kittens will be going in for their first check-up, deworming and FVRCP vaccine.  It'll no doubt be quite an adventure for the little guys... their first time out in the great big world since being just two weeks old!

Ever the clown, we particularly love his "Rarrr... big scary monster!" picture on the right.  This little monkey is the adventurer and explorer, and true to being a boy, he loves getting into mischief (example, his newest adventure was figuring out how to get his little head stuck under the reclining couch... never fear, it's out and he's just fine!).  Garfield is ever-playful and absolutely loves following his foster family around the house.

Gismo

This little girl is described by her foster mom as "just plain fun".  She's apparently turning into quite the little rolly-polly kitten and loves, loves, loves to play with toys.  She's one of the first out of bed in the morning to go exploring the house (with her sidekick, Garfield), but she's also an absolute mama's-girl and takes any opportunity to snuggle with her foster mom.  She looks like she might possibly be medium-haired as an adult... we'll see!

Mikey

Seriously, how can you resist that smooshy-face on the left?!  We just want to carry him around in our pockets all day long!  And it doesn't sound like he'd mind much, as his fosters describe him as "the ultimate cuddle bug."  Mikey's been a purr-machine since day one.  He just loves, loves, loves to be cuddled and apparently is an afficianado for a good blow-dry after bathtime!

Otter

Well this little munchkin wasn't quite feeling the picture-taking idea this week, although his fosters were able to capture some cute ones of him snuggling with his siblings (see below).  Little Otter is the smallest of the litter and loves the extra TLC that he gets - extra milk, free rides to the family room, etc.  He's quite the snuggler and is beginning to show his hidden playful side.  He's a little bit bashful at first, and he might need a cup of coffee to get him out of bed in the morning, but this little guy is full of adorableness and affection!

PeeWee

Who can resist the sleepyface?!  Don't let it fool you though.... little Miss PeeWee is very curious and loves to go exploring.  Her most favorite place to hang out is right under mom's feet!  She's an active little girl though and while she loves to be picked up and cuddled, if it's during kitten-adventure time, don't plan on cuddling for too long... this little girl has places to go and people to see!

Other cute must-see pics of the kittens...

These little munchkins are growing like weeds and learning more about kittenhood every day.   They are now just over 4 weeks of age.  Family that visit them at their fosters' house are still in debate as to whether they're really kittens, or if in fact they're chickens in kitten coats, as if you're sitting and they want to be near you, they just park themselves on your feet and hang out!   They're all learning pretty well about eating kitten mush off of a plate rather than walking through it, and consequently bathtime is down to only one time per day rather than two to three.  In fact, the pictures below are during the kittens latest blow-dry session after a bath this weekend.  Once bathtime's done, they each want their cuddle time on the neck of their foster mom!

Personalities are beginning to show themselves!  Mikey is a purr-monkey and Garfield is the first to follow the foster family around the room.  PeeWee is Mr. Adventure, while Otter and Gismo are content to stay close to home (their den) and safety!  All five though are thoroughly in love with people and happy as clams when they're cuddled.  Stay tuned!

The little kids are growing and devoping with each passing day!  They've now started their "wobbly walk" journey, learning to move around more & more and explore the world around them.  They've discovered that whenever possible, they love to make their way over to the feet of their fosters, no doubt with hopes that they'll be scooped up, fed & nuzzled.  Needless to say, the fosters step very lightly and cautiously when in the room with these little guys!

All eyes have opened up completely and we're beginning to see their ears standing up straight... ah, how they're developing so quickly!  They're still feeding multiple times throughout the day, although are sleeping soundly throughout the night.  Their teeth are starting to come in, so they're beginning to bite the bottle and the fosters have started putting small amounts of kitten mush (wet food and milk) on their fingers, which the kittens are starting to eat (Garfield caught on pretty quickly, so true to the name of the kitten who loves so much to eat!).  They're each gaining weight quite successfully, and PeeWee will be the first to tell you that he wants to gain weight faster, so bring on the food!   Soon enough they'll be ready for their first de-worming, and in a few more weeks, it'll be time for their first vaccine.  All are beginning to understand the concept of the litter box, but at such a young age, it's very understandably a hit-and-miss project still.  But "A" for effort!

(Note:   Otter's picture will be updated soon... computer mishap!)

Monday 7/28/08

On Friday we pulled these five little cuties.  They had been surrendered that day without mama cat and being so young, couldn't last long without a feeding, so they've gone into a great foster home where they'll be bottle-fed for a few more weeks until they're ready to make the big-kitten leap to wet food mush!
